If you’ve got a storefront, get into geo-social media

I got religion about geo-social media recently at a workshop by Charlie Wollborg of CurveDetroit, hosted by Automation Alley.

Three insights:

  • Geo-social media offer an excellent promotional opportunity for place-based businesses, like restaurants, salons, retailers.  Examples:  Foursquare, Yelp, Google Places, Gowalla
  • In three years, your mobile app will be more important that your website.
  • Don’t use a percentage discount as your promotional offer.  Enable visitors to experience something new about your business, like “Buy a frappe today, get a smoothie on your next visit.”
